What is iDesign?iDesign is a separate division with LAUSD created to give schools more local decision making authority to improve student academic success and close achievement gaps. LMU is our network partner in the Westchester iDesign schools. Kentwood is also a member of the Loyola Marymount University (LMU) Family of Schools (FOS).iDesign’s Mission Statement iDesign Background iDesign schools have more flexibility in their curriculum, instructional strategies, professional development, hiring, governance, budgets and school programs. The Governance Council is the body elected at Kentwood to make decisions for the school. This body decides who we hire to fill positions, how we spend our budgetary resources and our curriculum to name a few. Members consist of administration, teachers and parents. Our teachers also gain more flexibility under iDesign. While we adhere to California state standards for education, our teachers can customize their curriculum to meet their students’ needs rather than follow a formulaic day. Local decision making authority also comes with more accountability. Improved student achievement is the goal of this design and it will be monitored closely to ensure we are meeting our objectives. California’s goal is for each school and all subcategories (African-American, White, Hispanic, etc.) to meet an API target of 800. So, what is LMU’s role in all this? Kentwood receives additional resources from LMU as our network partner. LMU provides professional training and development for our teachers and administrators, technical support, academic performance reviews, Arts Link, College Readiness programs and Human Relations training. Local decision making is new for Kentwood and administrators have never had this much flexibility. LMU is providing our Governance Councils and administrators training on budgeting and governance so they learn how to “run” their schools with these new controls. LMU also provides tangible resources in the form of computers, tutors, fundraising help, and access to their campus for events, etc. Governance Council Members: Teachers: Jeanie Bussiere, Roberta Guarnieri, Lisa Kravetz & Carol Rich Parents: Jeanie Butler, Joel Kellum & Mylah Wessels Classified Staff: Debbie Kolts Administrator: Jean Pennicooke Ex Officio Community Member: Rebecca Bernal The eight sub-committees of Governance are: Budget; Curriculum & Instruction; ELAC (Bilingual); Human Resources; Parent & Community Involvement; Policy/Operations/Facilities; Professional Development; and School Programs/Schedule |
