Joel Sadler, Inventor comes to Kentwood!

Thank you to Joel Sadler for coming to Kentwood and speaking to our students!  It was great to show off our Innovation lab and show him how we integrated his amazing Piper Computer Kit into our program!

Check out his kit here:

Joel Sadler is a Jamaican born inventor who graduated from MIT and then became a BioX Fellow at Stanford University where he explored enhancing human creativity with better prototyping tools. While studying engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology he became interested in the needs of wheelchair users, and developed a love of the design process applied to the human body.

Joel has cofounded a creative computing startup Piper Inc to inspire kids to make electronic devices. After graduating from Stanford University, he shipped the Piper Computer Kit to thousands of kids around the world, who have now built their own computer through a game-based learning platform. Recent press announced Joel raising $2.1M in seed money.

Kentwood is a neighborhood school so walking to school for the annual Walk to School Day 2018 was easy for many Koalas in our community.

We WAM’ed – did you?

Thanks to everyone who participated in yesterday’s Westchester Arts and Music (WAM) Block Party along Emerson Ave. We had teachers, parents, and several of our current and alumni koalas volunteering at the Kentwood booth. Visitors could pick up information about our great school, purchase our Kentwood bags*, and make their very own paper plate koalas. More than 100 kids made and proudly carried their homemade koalas at the party! Check out a few pictures from the event. What a fun day. We hope to see you all next year at WAM!

*Bags are still available on our Fresh Schools online store:

Back to School Picnic

The last Saturday in August, Kentwood families enjoyed getting together at the annual Back to School picnic. Our koalas enjoyed a dunk tank, water slide, and games, and many of them even built their own koalas to take home. Add in some yummy food and shaved ice and the afternoon was complete. Great food, fun activities, and new and old friends – it was an awesome way to spend our Saturday!
