5th Grade Science Camp

Kentwood’s 5th grade students look forward to and enjoy Science Camp for three on Catalina Island through the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI). The program on Toyon Bay provides a unique and exciting  environment that’s the perfect way to enhance any student’s education.

By focusing on hands-on experiential science, and utilizing our state of the art labs and equipment, they strive to increase science literacy.  The expert instructors use the natural land and sea environments of beautiful Catalina Island to stimulate minds, and most importantly, to create excitement about science.

Students and teachers have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the diverse Southern California flora and fauna found in the ocean that surrounds Catalina Island.

Individual exploration and discovery are at the heart of CIMI’s educational philosophy. In addition to its academic value, another major benefit of attending CIMI is the Camp Experience. While camp is fun, exciting and educational, it also teaches children practical life skills. By working in small teams to accomplish goals, they learn to get along with others in a group living situation and forge stronger friendships. The very nature of the experience encourages personal responsibility, initiative and independence. Camp is an opportunity to develop character.
